Marketing is a key element of any business. If you’re not spending time and money on marketing, how do you expect to bring in more business? However, there are good and bad marketing techniques.

There is a common mistake made by the majority of people. They try to get new business but they don’t follow through on their initial contact. Here is a prime example of what separates the successful people from those who are struggling to make ends meet.

A classic case happened recently where a customer had sold their house at auction. Shortly after the auction day, they received nine phone calls from removal companies offering their services. Because the customer didn’t have details finalised, they couldn’t make a decision.

Would you believe that not one of those nine initial phone calls was followed up by either a second call or even an email? The customer hard a hard time deciding who to use and if someone had the smart business sense to do a simple follow up, they would have probably got the job.

This story happens lots of times. If you want more work, you have to be prepared to do everything possible to get it. Having an active, decent website is a good start. Spending money and time on marketing and advertising is critical to your success. Don’t let other people steal your work because you couldn’t be bothered following up potential leads!

The second key point is that people only think about themselves. If you’re smart and network properly, you’ll end up with more work as well. Take our National Backloads site as just one example. We have had people say “take us off your mailing list” and that’s fine. Of course we’ll do that.

However, we have also has a number of smart business people who see the sense in networking with other similar businesses in order to bring in more business for everyone. This is the group that will end up making more money in the long run because they can see the bigger picture.

The choice is entirely yours to make. Which group would you rather belong to?
